New Bottle-Filling Stations Coming to Downtown Stamford

If you're out and about in Stamford, feeling thirsty and looking for a way to beat the heat, UBS is joining up with Smart Tap to quench your thirst starting Wednesday.

As part of a pilot program, UBS is sponsoring three bottle-filling stations around downtown Stamford. Smart Tap is a company that provides these stations free-of-charge.

"As a member of the Stamford community, we have a keen interest in the sustainability of the city as well as the wellbeing of its residents," said Lori Feinsilver, UBS’s Head of Community Affairs and Executive Communications, Americas. "We all understand the importance of water and hydration to good health. Equally important is the positive environmental impact that our partnership with Smart Tap will have by encouraging the use of reusable water bottles."

The first filling station is being installed in Columbus Park Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Two more will follow, one in Latham Park and the other out front of the Ferguson Library.

The Columbus Park Smart Tap will launch just before jazz legend Chick Corea & The Vigil take the stage for the final show in the Jazz Up July series (though if you plan on attending, you might need an umbrella.)

The stations will provide locally-sources filtered water for the refillable bottles residents might be carrying around, but also have traditional fountains attached as well.

"The impact of disposable plastic water bottles on the environment is significant, costing upwards of $200 million per year and causing in excess of 1.5 million tons of landfill waste," said Bill Apfelbaum, founder of Smart Tap and CEO. "By encouraging people to drink locally-treated water and using reusable bottles when doing so, we can stem the tide of waste in this country and improve the health of our citizens."
