Baby Deer Abandoned by Mom Recovered in Stamford

A baby deer was recovered in Stamford after apparently being abandoned by its mother, Stamford Animal Care & Control Shelter Director Laurie Hollywood said this Monday.

The fawn was recovered on Webbs Hill Road on Wednesday, June 5, after being monitored for several days. It is not unusual for a mother to leave her baby alone for several hours while she goes to feed, but after several days of the deer being left alone, Hollywood said they intervened.

The homeowners along Webbs Hill Road who contacted the shelter initially took the deer into their own home and fed it some sort of milk. Hollywood stressed that this is not something anyone with a concern for a wild animal should ever do, but instead asked they call animal control first.

Hollywood also said concerned residents can also directly contact several licensed wildlife rehabilitation centers like Wildlife in Crisis at 203.544.9913, the Wildlife Hotline at 203.389.4411 or Tailors Wildlife Rehabilitation at 203.524.2189, the latter of which took in the baby deer after the Stamford Animal Shelter picked it up.

All of those wildlife organizations are not-for-profit and rely on donations to continue providing assistance.
