Agabhumi Owner's Garden an Ode to Bali

When Agabhumi owner Regina Kirshbaum is not hard at work selling clothing, shoes, jewelry and accesories imported from Bali, she's relaxing with her three dogs in the backyard oasis she created as a homage to one of her favorite countries.

"My husband and I wanted to create a place that brought the peace and spirituality of Bali home," she told Patch. "To be able to create a place like this is so rewarding."

Kirshbaum says that her approach to updating her garden each spring is not unlike her approach to merchandising the store, which is located at 22 Magee Ave. "It has to be enticing at every angle, so I make it a project and visit various stores to find the colors and varieties that appeal to me."

Kirshbaum likes to choose annuals that have a tropical look, such as hibisucus and moon vine, as well as bamboo. She also prefers using rocks instead of mulch because their ability to reflect light.

Although she starts out with a vision of how she wants her garden to look each year, Kirshbaum said she always approaches the task with an open mind. "It's all about having fun," she said.

Kirshbaum said that her love of gardening started with her grandfather. "It brought him so much joy and relaxation, so I figured that it would do the same for me."

She added that she loves to read and play with her dogs in the garden as way to de-stress from her hectic pace. "We also like to share it with friends," Kirshbaum said. "Our time with them is so precious."
