"Neighbors is a story about a group of real neighbors getting together to help Vicki establish the Chess Song and go out into the communities and try to help kids and young adults make better decisions by teaching them the basics of chess." The Birth of Neighbors…

In April 2009 Vicki moved to Byram, a village in Connecticut within the Town of Greenwich. While trying to get the Chess Song program into Camp Vacamas, a sleep away camp in New Jersey, she started sharing what she was doing with her new neighbors. Unfortunately, the camp didn’t want the program and just as she was about to give up this five year fight, as if it was a gift from God she noticed some information about Cablevision's Public Access program in her cable bill and it had dawned on her that maybe she should just put the show on their local Public Access television station.

After learning that her idea wasn’t accepted her new neighbors rallied together in support they were more than willing to do whatever they could to help. Together they went through training to become Public Access TV producers and now they had access to the skills and equipment needed to film a complete history of the Chess Song. At the same time, they were able to air their journey on public access TV so that the children and young adults at home can learn that it’s FUN and EASY to learn how to play the game of Chess.

While she knew that children, young adults and their parents would not just turn on the television and watch the program we decided to follow the footsteps of other popular TV programs and get into the genre of reality TV—a DOCrealty as we like to call it.

We knew that their parents would want to watch the documentary part because of the important subject that this new band of neighbors, who were essentially strangers, where trying to accomplish. Add this to the fact that children and young adults are part of the generation that enjoy reality TV and that together they would learn a lot by watching the story unfolding before them and witness firsthand how dedicated this group felt about helping out a stranger in need. At the same time they would learn the Chess Song and the lessons they can take away from the concepts of Chess and realize how important it is to think ahead and make better decisions since every decision has an ultimate consequence – good or bad.
