Bomb Threat at Stamford Courthouse Delays Douglas Arraignment

The arraignment of Frank O. Douglas, suspect in the case during which Officer Troy Strauser was injured, was delayed—but not canceled—by a bomb threat in the early morning.

The arraignment of a suspect officers were chasing when one of their own suffered a catastrophic injury was delayed until late in the afternoon Friday after a bomb scare closed the Stamford Superior Courthouse through lunch. Authorities took the morning to investigate a handbag left in a trashcan out front of the courthouse, bringing in the bomb squad team and bomb-sniffing dogs to the scene. After the incident, state police returned the bag to the woman, who said it was full of antiques and that she'd left it in the trashcan because she was told she couldn't bring it in the courthouse and didn't think anyone would bother it if it was in the trash. Frank O. Douglas, 30, a Connecticut resident his whole life, was due in court on a litany of…

GREENWICH: "Frankly, I have no intention of shopping for liquor on Sundays and the stores can stay closed." Holly Izant-McSharry wrote this in response to an article about storeowners' reactions to the end of the "Blue Laws." WESTPORT: "I'll drink to that!" Sunday Liquor Sales Bill Signed Into Law [VIDEO]

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy ends "Blue Laws" in ceremony at Enfield Town Hall.

Connecticut's archaic "Blue Laws" prohibiting liquor stores from opening on Sundays ended Thursday, with the signing of legislation that allows those retailers the opportunity to open seven days a week if they so choose. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed the bill into law in the Town Council Chambers at Enfield Town Hall. Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, state Sen. John Kissel, Rep. Kathy Tallarita and Rep. David Kiner were among the legislators present for the ceremony. The bill allows liquor permittees to sell alcohol from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays, as well as on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, and on Mondays following a Christmas or New Year's Day holiday that falls on a Sunday.  The governor said he chose to stage the signing …

Friends, Family Wait for Update on Off. Strauser's Condition

After undergoing at least three corrective and exploratory surgeries Thursday, friends and family wait for news and signs of improvement from Officer Troy Strauser.

Sgt. Joseph Kennedy, President of the Stamford Police Association, released an update on Officer Troy Strauser Thursday night, who was injured during a pursuit that went through several towns and exits along I-95 early Thursday morning. "He's still in critical care," Kennedy said Thursday evening. "They are trying to stabilize the situation and that's about where we are medically at this moment." Strauser was injured on duty after taking a 20-foot fall off of the Fairfield Avenue Bridge while giving chase to a suspect fleeing on foot. Strauser landed on a barrier and ended up facedown on the pavement after the fall. Kennedy explained Strauser had already undergone surgery for facial and elbow injuries earlier in the day and was conscious …

Stamford SportsBeat: My 6:37 A.M. Tee Time

A special tribute to my father who passed away four years ago.

[Note: Want your photos and/or write-ups from Stamford youth or recreational sports featured on Stamford Patch? Here's how!] Ever since my father died, I don't play golf very much anymore. In fact, I only play once a year and when I do, I take just one swing and call it a day. One swing is all I need to put a smile on my face and go home. No mulligans, no excuses, no do-overs. On May 17, I hit one ball to honor my father who died on this day, and I do it early. Patrick J. Devlin passed away at 6:37 a.m on May 17, 2008. On the anniversary of his passing, I get up well before dawn and drive to the Westchester Country Club in Harrison, New York. I make sure I allow for enough time for traffic, bad weather, and other unpredictable things, …
