Five Reasons To Pick MMA Instead Of Karate In Stamford

Karate Champion Brings Pedigree To MMA

Sensei Nick Demetrius was ranked number one in the world in sport karate for three straight years as a teenager. Fast forward fifteen years and he doesn’t teach those techniques to his martial arts students. That might be hard to believe for many, but for the Tiger Schulmann’s Stamford owner and Head Instructor it’s an easy choice.

“We’ve learned very clearly that traditional Karate has nowhere near the effectiveness of a modern Mixed Martial Art,” says Demetrius. “I can teach my students all the traditional values of a Karate school while also giving them the best self-defense.”

Change Comes To Everything, Especially Karate

Demetrius says Karate was developed in the 1500′s in Okinawa to help farmers defend themselves from Japanese Samurai. Of course children today don’t have to face those kinds of self-defense situations. What they still need is the focus and perseverance Karate built for hundreds of years.

“Our curriculum is designed with a three step process to instill self-discipline. First kids see a disciplined class. The rules are clear and kids know they will receive no attention for negative behavior. Instead we use positive reinforcement and students very quickly follow the atmosphere of the more experienced students. We also build discussions and stories into class to teach our new students exactly how focus and ‘non-quitting spirit’ will help them. The final step is the most important. Everyone hits a plateau at some point. We show our students first hand how pushing through that plateau will make them feel great.”

Demetrius says once students achieve that accomplishment they start to understand how to push themselves instead of needing a teacher or parent. He says what makes his classes succeed where other martial arts programs fail is the style of MMA.

“Kids know what a bullying situation is going to look like. Even though playing with a bo staff or doing kata like traditional Karate may be fun at first, it doesn’t have the relevance to make a child want to persevere when the plateau hits. My students see the benefit of what they are learning immediately. That makes it easier to stay consistent and ultimately learn self-discipline.”
