Brendan Strobel and Tim Riley scored Saturday as the Trumbull boys hockey team held off Westhill 2-1 in the finals of the FCIAC tier two playoffs at the Terry Conners Rink.

After a scoreless first period, Strobel opened the scoring in the first period before Riley added what turned out to be the winning goal in the third quarter.

Evan Shaulson got Westhill on the board with 1:58 left, setting in motion a wild final two minutes.

The Vikings thought they had tied the game on a goal by Lukas Znosko with 20 seconds left, but it was waived off because the officials ruled the net was moved before the puck entered the net.

Michael Ahearn had two assists for Trumbull, which improved to 13-9, while Westhill ended its season at 6-14-2.

Chris Sarosky made 15 saves for Trumbul while Adam Goldstone turned aside 26 shots for Westhill.

Westhill graduate Dan Madwed had seven top-three finishes, including four wins, as the fourth-ranked Michigan swim team recently claimed its 36th Big 10 title.

The senior set University of Iowa pool records in winning the 100 butterfly (46.02) and 200 butterfly (1:42.67) and also was a member of the Wolverines' winning 400 medley relay (3:07.32) and 800 free relay (6:16.26) teams.

In addition, Madwed finished second in the 200 IM and 400 free relay and third in the 200 free relay.

Afer an improbable run to the Class M state championship last year, the Trinity Catholic boys basketball moved up to Class L this season and is seeded seventh.

The Crusaders (15-5 in the regular season), who lost to Bassick 62-48 in the FCIAC championship game, open state tournament play on Monday against No. 26 seed Fairfield Ludlowe (9-11) at 7 p.m.

If Trinity Catholic advances, the Crusaders could see another FCIAC opponent in the second round as they would face either No. 10 University or No. 23 Wilton.

A possible matchup with No. 2 seed Career Magnet, which defeated previously unbeaten Hillhouse to win the SCC title last Tuesday, is looming in the quarterfinals.

The Trinity Catholic boys hockey team (9-11) earned the ninth and final seed in the Division I state tournament and will play at No. 14 Windsor-Farmington-Avon (13-5-2) in a play-in game on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the International
Skating Center in Simsbury.

While the Crusaders' record doesn't look impressive, Trinity Catholic turned its season around after going to freshman goaltender Kyle Odierno.

After a 2-10 start, the Crusaders won seven of their final eight games to make the FCIAC tier one playoffs, where they put up a strong fight in a 2-1 quarterfinal loss to St. Joseph.

The winner of Monday's contest faces No. 3 seed Ridgefield (18-2) in the first round on Wednesday. Ridgefield, ranked third in the state, defeated Darien 3-2 in the FCIAC championship game on Saturday.

Last season, Trinity Catholic did not qualify for postseason play, finishing 5-15.
