The boys basketball team came on short Thursday in a bid to win its sixth FCIAC title since 2001.

Instead, Bassick captured its second consecutive league title with a 62-48 victory over the Crusaders at Fairfield Warde. Trinity Catholic dropped to 5-4 in FCIAC finals appearances in the last 12 years.

Bassick's Demetrius Thomas scored 13 points and and grabbed 15 rebounds to earn MVP honors as the Lions improved to 17-5. Trinity Catholic, the No. 2 seed, dropped to 17-6.

Thomas was sidelined earlier in the season due to Bridgeport's new academic requirements, but Bassick is a better team with him in the lineup. He scored 32 points in the Lions' semifinal win over Bridgeport Central.

Jerond Rogers scored 19 points to pace the fifth-seeded Lions, who never trailed, while Devin Coleman added 10.

Schadrac Casimir scored 16 points to lead Trinity Catholic, but he was the only player in double figures for the Crusaders. Kevin Lemeune finished with nine points

Bassick took control early, jumping out to a 14-5 lead after the first quarter before Trinity Catholic pulled within 29-24 at the intermission.

After an even third quarter, Bassick the game out of reach in the fourth period, outscoring Trinity Catholic 21-13 to successfully defend its FCIAC crown.

The Trinity Catholic girls basketball team suffered a 49-40 loss to No. 3 seed Ellington in the second round of the Class M state tournament on Thursday.

Ali Palma scored 15 points and Mackenzie Griffin added 13 in their final games for the Crusaders. Earlier in the season, Griffin became the seventh player in school history to score 1,000 career points.

Trinity Catholic, which jumped out to a 13-7 lead, finished the season at 14-9.

Kelly Conley poured in 23 points and Karlee Alves added 11 for Ellington, which improved to 19-3.

Ellington outscored the Crusaders 17-10 in the second quarter to take a 24-23 halftime lead, then put away the game with a 16-11 spurt in the final period.

Westhill's Pascal Medor and Stamford's Ben Pierre Saint will compete in the New England wrestling championships this weekend in Providence.

Medor finished second last week in the 106-pound division in the state Open championships while Pierre Saint was the runnerup in the 132-pound class.

Trumbull will take on Westhill in the final of the FCIAC's tier two boys hockey  playoffs on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Terry Conners Rink in Stamford.

The contest will precede the tier one final between Darien and Ridgefield, which gets under way at 6 p.m.

The Eagles advanced with a 3-1 win over Fairfield last week while Westill defeated Stamford 4-1 to reach the tier two final, which featured the seventh- through 10th-place teams in the FCIAC standings.

Brendan Strobel, Michael Ahearn and Brandon Elbert scored for Trumbull (12-9), which has qualified for the Division II state tournament.

Neal Smolinski scored two goals and Ryan Silk and Lukas Znosko each added one for Westhill (6-12-2), which will be playing its final game of the season on Saturday.

Trumbull will be looking to avenge a 5-4 overtime loss to the Vikings earlier in the season.

Ahearn is Trumbull's leading scorer this season with 24 goals and 22 assists for 46 points while Strobel (15-11-26) and Tim Riley (10-13-23) also have double-figure goals.
