After somewhat of an up-and-down season, at least based on preseason expectations, the boys basketball team is back in a familiar place -- playing for the county championship.

The second-seeded Crusaders (17-5) will be seeking their sixth FCIAC championship since 2001 on Thursday when they take on No. 5 seed and defending champion Bassick (17-5) in the finals at Fairfield Warde at 7:30 p.m.

Trinity Catholic overcame a sluggish first half -- the Crusaders trailed 21-9 at the intermission -- to defeat Ridgefield 52-44 in overtime in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Bassick advanced with a 72-59 victory over No. 8 seed Bridgeport Central, which shocked top seed and previously unbeaten St. Josesph 62-58 in the quarterfinals.

Demetrius Thomas, who was sidelined earlier in the season due to academic issues, led the Lions with 32 points in their win over Central. Bassick beat Stamford in last year's FCIAC title game.

Trinity Catholic will be making its ninth FCIAC finals appearance in the last 12 years, although the Crusaders' last title came in 2008.

Trinity Catholic won the FCIAC championship in 2001, then reeled off three straight from 2003-05. The Crusaders lost in the finals in 2006, 2007 and 2009.

Although it has five losses, Bassick could be dangerous in the Class L state tournament with Thomas back in the fold.

Afer an improbable run to the Class M state championship last year, Trinity Catholic moved up to Class L this season and is seeded seventh.

The Crusaders (15-5 in the regular season) open state tournament play on Monday against No. 26 seed Fairfield Ludlowe (9-11) at 7 p.m.

If Trinity Catholic advances, the Crusaders could see another FCIAC opponent in the second round as they would face either No. 10 University or No. 23 Wilton.

A possible matchup with No. 2 seed Career Magnet, which defeated previously unbeaten Hillhouse to win the SCC title on Tuesday, is looming in the quarterfinals.

First-round play in Class LL gets under way on Tuesday. Westhill (14-6) is the 11th seed and hosts No. 22 Norwich Free Academy (11-9) while No. 17 Stamford (12-8) is on the road at No. 16 Cheshire (12-8).

If Westhill advances, it would take on either No. 6 Fairfield Prep or No. 27 Norwalk in the second round on Thursday.

If Stamford wins its first round contest, the Black Knights likely would see top seed St. Joseph, which went 20-0 in the regular season, in the second round. The Cadets host No. 32 Shelton (8-12) in their first-round contest.
