Stamford Sports Roundup: Feb. 22

For interactive daily digest for all Stamford scores, schedules and standings -- and a place to add information and photos for all youth sports

Numerous FCIAC boys basketball teams will be scoreboard watching on Wednesday as the wild and wacky playoff race heads to a conclusion, but the formula is simple for Stamford High School -- win and the Black Knights are in.

Stamford took a huge step toward the playoffs Monday with a 77-72 victory over Bassick. The victory left the Black Knights (11-8, 10-7) alone in sixth place in the FCIAC standings -- one game ahead of a longjam of five teams at 9-8 -- Bridgeport Central, Danbury, Fairfield Warde, Greenwich and Trumbull.

Stamford only needs to win at Harding to clinch a playoff spot. While stranger things happened, it is hard to imagine the Black Knights losing to the Presidents, who are coming off a 52-47 loss to a one-win New Canaan team.

Should that happen, however, Stamford likely would have to worry about tiebreakers. In other games Wednesday,  Bridgeport Central faces McMahon, Greenwich visits Danbury, Warde takes on unbeaten St. Joseph and Trumbull battles Trinity Catholic.

Ludlowe (8-9) and Staples (8-9) are mathematically alive but may need a miracle to get in.

Central would get to 10 wins with an expected victory over McMahon (which actually coming off a 64-62 win over Staples) and the Greenwich-Danbury winner also would get to 10 victories

Warde and Trumbull would have to pull off major upsets - St.Joseph is undefeated - to reach the coveted 10-win plateau.

With a loss, Stamford is looking at a three-way tie with Central and Danbury or Central and Greenwich. The Black Knights lost to all three, so they would be eliminated in that scenario.

In other action Wednesday, Westhill (14-5, 13-4), which has won 10 of its last 11 games, can clinch the No. 2 seed with a win at home against Ridgefield. Should the Vikings falter, Trinity Catholic (14-5, 13-4) can grab the No. 2 seed with a victory at Trumbull.

***

The Trinity Catholic boys hockey team can clinch a berth in the FCIAC tier one playoffs with a victory over Westhill on Wednesday at the Terry Conners Rink (6:40 p.m.).

Even with a loss, the Crusaders can secure one of the top six spots if Darien beats Fairfield Warde since Trinity Catholic (8-11, 7-4) has a tiebreaker over the Mustangs.

Making the tier one playoffs would be an impressive accomplishment after the Crusaders started 2-10. Trinity Catholic reeeled off six straight wins before suffering a 2-0 loss at Wilton on Saturday.

The Darien-Fairfield game is set for 2 p.m., so the Crusaders will know if they meet to beat Westhill.

New Canaan is tied with Wilton for fourth in the FCIAC standings at 8-4 while Trinity Catholic and Fairfield are tied for sixth at 7-4.

If both Trinity Catholic and Fairfield win on Wednesday, New Canaan would be knocked out in a four-way tie and drop down to the tier two playoffs. Both the Crusaders and Mustangs have a tiebreaker edge over the Rams.
