During Stamford's season-opening football game on Friday against Harding (6 p.m.), the city will dedicate the Black Knights' field to the late Andy Robustelli.

The complex will be renamed Andy Robustelli Field at Boyle Stadium. A plaque and dedication ceremony will take place.

A Stamford native and member of the NFL Hall of Fame, Robustelli passed away on May 31 at the age of 85. He spent 14 seasons in the NFL, including the last nine with the New York Giants from 1956-64.

The Giants won the 1956 NFL championship in Robustelli's first season. They won five more conference championships during his tenure, in 1958, 1959, 1961,  1962 and 1963. Robustelli played on a winning team in 13 of his 14 pro seasons and played in eight NFL championship games.

Robustelli was selected to seven Pro Bowls and was named first team All-NFL seven times, two with the Rams and five with the Giants. He was also a three-time second-team All-Pro choice. In 1962, the Maxwell Club selected Robustelli as the NFL's top player, an honor then usually given to an offensive player.

Boyle Stadium originally was named for Michael A. Boyle, a longtime football coach and athletic director at Stamford.

Stamford's John Cook, 76, won his age group (75-79) in the International Triathlon Union World Championships in Beijing.

Competing on Sunday, Cook, 76, completed the Olympic distance course in 3 hours, 50 minutes and 13 seconds. His previous best finish was 15th in the 2005 Age Group World Championships in Honolulu.

The Olympic distance triathlon consists of a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40K bike ride and a 10K run.
