The U.S. lightweight men’s double sculls team of Rowayton's Brian de Regt and New Haven's Jon Winter finished fourth in its quarterfinal Wednesday at the World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovakia.

The team missed the first-level semifinal and a chance to reach the A final, but it still has an opportunity to qualify for the Olympics next year in London.

To do that, de Regt and Winter must finish among the top 11 boats at the world championships. They now drop into the "B" level competition.

The 77th annual Stamford Yacht Club Vineyard race gets under way on Friday.

More than 90 boats from Fairfield and Westchester Counties will participate in the 238-mile race, which takes sailors to Buzzards Bay in Cape Cod and back to the Stamford Yacht Club.

After Irene hit, there was some concern that the race might have to be cancelled. However, the SYC received minimal damage, allowing the race to begin on time.

First contested in 1932, the Vineyard Race takes place annually on Labor Day weekend.

The fastest time to complete the course was set by Blue Yankee in 2007. Skippered by Bob and Farley Towse of Stamford, it covered the course in 20 hours, 20 minutes and 15 seconds.

Former King Low Heywood & Thomas standout Silas Redd is listed as Penn State's No. 1 running back on the Nittany Lions' depth chart heading into Saturday's season opener against Indiana State.

The 5-10, 210-pound tailback could be ready for a breakout campaign after a solid freshman season a year ago.

Last season, Redd was the Nittany Lions' second-leading rusher with 437 yards while scoring a pair of touchdowns.

Redd recorded his first career 100-yard rushing game with 131 yards on only 11 carries (11.9) in Penn State's 35-21 come-from-behind win against Northwestern.

Evan Royster rushed for 134 yards, marking only the fourth time in the program's storied history that two running backs surpassed 130 yards in the same game.

Penn State hadn't accomplished the feat since September 25, 1971, when Nittany Lion legends Lydell Mitchell (211) and Franco Harris (145) blitzed Iowa.

Known for his explosive speed, Redd is expected to get the bulk of the carries this season following the graduation of Royster, Penn State's all-time leading rusher.

Many observers, in fact, feel that the Norwalk native is on a fast track to the NFL.

Redd and sophomore linebacker Khairi Fortt, who hails from Stamford, are returning Nittany Lions from Connecticut. They first met at Penn State's summer football camp and forged a friendship that would bring both of them to Happy Valley in January 2010.

The JumpStart 5K Walk/Run & Family Fun Day, sponsored by the Center Women of the JCC, is set for Labor Day at 9 p.m. at the Stamford Jewish Community Center.

Max Lippolis of Pound Ridge, N.Y., won last year's race in 49:04 to edge Cos Cob's Alex Weil by three seconds.

Kristin Budden of Rye Brook, N.Y., was the woman's champion at 56:53, finishing a mere one second ahead of Darien's Rose Shabet.
