The Westhill boys soccer team completed its remarkable run to the FCIAC playoffs Wednesday with a 3-0 victory over Fairfield Warde.

Mateo Gallego scored two goals, one on a penalty kick, and Jacques Baudoin added the final goal for the Vikings (9-5-2), who appeared headed for a long season when they had to forfeit three early victories after it was learned that one of their players competed in a men's league.

However, Westhill recovered from an 0-5 start by going 9-0-2 and will enter the playoffs as the league's hottest team.

The Vikings, who needed to win Wednesday's game to get in, secured the No. 6 seed and will visit No. 3 seed Darien (11-2-3) in the quarterfinals on Friday.

New Canaan (8-3-5) grabbed the final spot with a 3-0 win over Fairfield Ludlowe on Wednesday and will take on top seed Norwalk (13-1-2), which batled Greenwich to a scoreless tie on Wednesday.

In the other quarterfinal matchups, No. 2 Trumbull (11-1-4) hosts No. 7 Wilton (9-5-2) and No. 4 Staples (10-2-4), which is seeking its fourth consecutive FCIAC title, is at home for No. 5 Greenwich (9-4-3).

Westhill, Wilton and New Canaan all tied with 29 points, but Westhill secured the sixth seed based on having the best record among the three team. Wilton grabbed the No. 7 seed by virtue of its win over New Canaan

The quarterfinal games will be played at the sites of the higher-seeded teams.  The semifinals are set for Tuesday at 5 and 7 p.m. at Fairfield Ludlowe with the championship game being played on Thursday at Norwalk at 7 p.m.

The matchups for the FCIAC field hockey playoffs also were determined Wednesday, and No. 4 Stamford (8-4-1-0) takes on No. 4 Staples (7-2-3-1) in the quarterfinals.

Fairfield Ludlowe (5-6-1-1) clinched a playoff berth Wednesday with a 2-1 victory at McMahon.

The Falcons grabbed the No. 7 seed and will meet No. 2 seed Wilton (11-2-0-0) in the quarterfinals. Ludlowe finished with 12 points, jumping ahead of Westhill and Greenwich in the final standings.

Westhill (5-7-1-1) clinched the No. 8 seed despite losing to New Canaan 3-0 on Wednesday. The Vikings finished in a tie with Greenwich with 11 points, but won the tiebreaker based on their victory over the Cardinals during the regular season.

The Vikings' reward is a matchup with top seed Darien (13-0-0-0), which has not since 2007.

In the other quarterfinal, No. 3 Norwalk (10-2-1-0) takes on No. 6 seed New Canaan (8-4-1-0). Stamford won a tiebreaker with New Canaan because of a win over the Rams in the regular season.

All quarterfinal games will be played at McMahon on Saturday and the times will be announced on Thursday.
