The Westhill boys soccer team was put into a hole when it was forced to forfeit three early wins for using an ineligible player.
However, the Vikings have been a roll since they got off to an official 0-5 start and continued their playoff push Wednesday with a 3-0 victory over defending three-time FCIAC champion Staples.
David Quito scored two goals and Mateo Gallego added one for the Vikings, who are 7-0-2 in their last nine games to improve their overall record to 7-5-2.
Quito opened the scoring a minute into Thursday's game, and the Vikings were never headed, taking a 2-0 lead on Gallego's goal in the ninth minute. Quito scored again midway through the second half to make it 3-0.
Westhill has climbed into a three-way tie for seventh in the playoff race with Greenwich (7-4-2) and Danbury (6-2-5). The top eight teams get in.
Westhill has only two games remaining at lowly Harding on Friday and home for Fairfield Warde (6-4-3) on Oct. 27
