With a win, Trinity Catholic can claim the city championship as the Crusaders opened the season with a 28-22 victory over Westhill, which plays at Franklin (Mass.) on Saturday to fill its bye week.
Hockey standout Ryan Haggerty will be honored as Stamford's Sports Person of the Year at the Fairfield County Sports Commission's seventh annual Sports Night awards dinner.
The dinner is set for Monday at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich at 6 p.m., and tickets are still available at $125 apiece.
Currently a freshman at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Haggerty was a member of the United States team that won a gold medal at the U-18 world championships in Germany in April.
Haggerty joined the junior national team, which trained in Michigan, after a stellar career at Trinity Catholic from 2007-09. In just two seasons with the Crusaders, he recorded 51 goals and 54 assists. As a sophomore, he earned all-state honors.
WTNH-Channel 8 sports director Noah Finz, a Greenwich resident, is the emcee for the evening. The newest members of the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame and 15 Sports Persons of the Year from county communities will be recognized.
Sports personalities slated to attend are former Yankees pitcher Tommy John, ex-NY Giants football player Bob Hyland, Lowes Moore, who played with the New Jersey Nets, former world boxing champion Travis Simms and Wes Matthews, a two-time NBA champion with the LA Lakers.
