Westhill did well to get this far as the Vikings started the year 0-5 after being forced to forfeit three games for using an illegal player. They responded with a 9-0-2 tear to qualify for the FCIAC playoffs.

Westhill goalkeeper Eli Kisselbach kept Monday's game relatively close with 10 saves.

Svet Kozak stopped three shots for Norwalk, which improved to 15-2-2 after getting eliminated in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs. Last year, the Bears were ousted in the second round of the state tournament as a No. 4 seed, so they were determined to get further this season.

In other Class LL games involving FCIAC teams on Monday, top seed Pomperaug defeated Greenwich 5-2 and Trumbull slipped past Simsbury, 2-1.

In Class L, Darien eliminated defending state champion New Canaan 1-0 and top seed Wethersfield outlasted Wilton 6-4 in overtime.

The Stamford field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 2 seed Glastonbury on Monday in the quarterfinals of the Class L state tournament.

Glastonbury will take on Norwalk in the semifinals on Wednesday. The Bears advanced with a 2-1 win over New Canaan.

The Westhill girls soccer team looks to move one step closer to another appearance in the state finals on Tuesday when the fifth-seed Vikings Vikings host Staples in an all-FCIAC affair in the Class LL quarterfinals (2 p.m.)

After just missing the FCIAC playoffs, the 20th-seeded Wreckers ousted No. 13 seed New Milford 3-1 in the first round last Thursday. On Saturday, they pulled off a bigger shocker, ousting defending state champion Shelton 1-0 in a dramatic affair that went to four rounds of penalty kicks. (10-5-3). Staples eventually prevailed, 14-11.

Westhill (13-2-4), which lost in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs, is no stranger to postseason play, having reached the state finals in each of the last two years. The Vikings won the state championship in 2009 before falling to Shelton in last year's final.

Westhill has reached the quarterfinals this year with wins over Danbury (2-0) and Masuk (1-0).

In the regular-season meeting, the Vikings posted a 1-0 win over the Wreckers on Oct. 18.

The winner of Tuesday's contest will take on either top seed Glastonbury or No. 25 Ridgefield in the semifinals. Ridgefield already has upset two top-10 seeds, including reigning FCIAC champion Greenwich.

Five FCIAC teams have reached the round of eight as New Canaan and Trumbull will square off in another quarterfinal Tuesday. Cheshire and Newtown meet in the final quarterfinal
