Austin Gambee allowed two hits over 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief as the Wilton senior American Legion team outlasted Stamford 4-3  in a 14-inning American Legion Zone Four marathon that nearly was suspended.

The contest ended at 11 p.m. - 15 minutes before the lights at Wilton High School were going to be turned off.

Wilton (9-7) avoided a three-game sweep in the series after losing a doubleheader to Stamford (8-5) at Cubeta Stadium on Monday by scores of  4-2 and 3-2 in 10 innings.

Wilton is in a stretch of playing nine games in seven days with five more contests on tap for this week, starting with Thursday's game against Trumbull.

What started as a scoring-fest in the first three innings, turned into a pitchers' duel over the next 11.

After Stamford scored a run in the top of the second, Wilton came back to plate two in the bottom half and grabbed a 2-1 lead.

Stamford answered with a pair in the third and the score remained unchanged until Wilton tied it in the bottom of the sixth.

Stamford starter Steve Hagedus worked the first 8 1/3 innings before giving way to Ryan Curto, who finished the contest.  Hagedus recorded 10 strikeouts.

Wilton threatened in the eighth, but came up empty as Gambee ran through coach Ian Thoesen's stop sign at third. He was called out trying to dive back into third.

Instead of first-and third with one out, Wilton only had a man on first with two outs and couldn't do any more damage in the inning. But Gambee redeemed himself on the mound.

Both teams are looking to get to the 14-win mark, which would qualify them for the state tournament.
