-- The fifth annual Swim Across America Greenwich-Stamford Swim is set for Sunday from 7-11 a.m. at Greenwich Point, Tods Driftway & Shore Road in Old Greenwich.

Anyone who enjoys swimming at any level is invited to participate.  Swim Across America holds numerous swimming events throughout the United States each year.

This is the fifth anniversary of the Greenwich–Stamford Swim, that has generated $700,000 in donations specifically for the local beneficiary, the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT), the nation’s only non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to funding cancer cell and gene therapy research.

This year’s Swim hopes to bring the total raised from the five years to $1 million.  ACGT is located on the Greenwich/Stamford border and its headquarters are the start and finish line for the Swim.

There will be four options for swimmers:  a half-mile course, a 1.5 mile course, or a 3-mile or 5-mile challenge. Participants must register at http://www.swimacrossamerica.org by clicking on the Greenwich–Stamford Swim link.

-- Considering there are more than 6,000 Little Leagues through the United States, the odds of any one reaching the promised land in Williamsport are astronomical.

But as Fairfield American showed last year, it is not impossible for a team from Connecticut to get there. The boys from Fairfield became the 17th squad from the state to reach the Little League World Series.

The summer-long process begins anew on Tuesday with the start of the District One tournament involving 14 teams from Stamford, Redding, Ridgefield, Darien, Norwalk, Weston and Wilton. Games will be played at various sites throughout the region over the next two weeks.

An opening ceremony will take place on Tuesday at Stamford's Springdale Field to honor the 60th anniversary of Stamford's 1951 team that won the Little League World Series.

The teams are split into two pools of seven for round robin play with the top two in each group qualifying for a playoff.

The eventual District One winner advances to the section one tournament, hosted by Orange of District Four, from July 20-27. The two sectional winners clash in a best-of-three series to determine the state champion.

The Connecticut state winner advances to the New England Regionals in Bristol from Aug. 4-14.  The eight regional winners from around the country qualify for the Little World Series, to be played from Aug. 18-28 in Williamsport.
