Westhill's hopes for a second straight softball state championship were dashed Monday night as the Vikings suffered a 4-1 loss to Conard in the Class LL title game at West Haven.
The contest originally was scheduled for Saturday at Stratford's Deluca Field, but was postponed due to wet field conditions.

The top-seeded Vikings (23-2), who lost only their second game on the season, set the tone in the first inning when they could not score despite getting five runners on base. Westhill had six runners thrown out on the bases and committed three errors.
Conard (20-3) won its first state championship in its initial appearance in the title game. The third-seeded Chieftains were eliminated in the first round in each of the last seven years.

Conard also completed an FCIAC hat trick, as its previous tournament wins came against Trumbull and Fairfield Warde.
Westhill scored its only run in the fifth as Allie Souza tripled and came home on Cassandra Kish's fielder's choice.
Westhill's Allison Macari pitched well enough to win, allowing only five hits.
Westhill's John Petrini and Brandon Pomerance have reached the final of the state Open doubles tennis championship after winning two matches on Sunday at Hamden.
Petrini and Pomerance defeated Old Saybook's Andrew DeAntonis and Jack Rothman 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, then ousted New Canaan's William Burger and Thomas Worcester 6-0, 0-6, 6-3 in the semifinals on Sunday.
