Stamford Scores and Standings: July 21

The Stamford senior American Legion team posted a 13-5 road victory at RCP on Wednesday to advance to the American Legion state tournament.

It was second win in as many days in the play-in tournament for Stamford, which defeated Elllington 13-5 on Tuesday, also on the road.

The eight zone winners gained automatic berths into the 16-team double elimination tournament. The other eight teams were determined through a play-in tournament Tuesday and Wednesday.

Two other teams from Zone Four -- Norwalk and Trumbull -won games Wednesday to also qualify. Greenwich, the first place, earned a automatic bid into the 16-team, double elimination tournament.

On Saturday, Trumbull faces Windsor Locks at Muzzy Field in Bristol at 3:30 after Norwalk takes on Niantic at 12:30 p.m.

In Middletown, Greenwich battles Bethel at 12:30, followed a contest between Stamford and defending American Legion state champion Branford at 3:30 p.m.

North Stamford began play in the section one 12-year-old Little League tournament on Wednesday with a 6-5 over Berlin in Orange.

In the other game, Fairfield American opened defense of its state championship by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat East Haven, 10-7.

Games will follow for Stamford American on Thursday (Shelton National), Saturday (Fairfield American) and Monday (Berlin).  The top two teams play for the sectional title on Wednesday and a berth in the state championship.

The 14s and 15s stayed alive in their respective state tournaments with impressive wins Wednesday.

The 15s routed Tri-County-New London 15-2 to advance to Thursday final against Trumbull at 5 p.m. in New Milford.

The 14s blanked Norwalk 10-0 in a game called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Justin Nizolek tossed a one-hitter for Stamford, which will Simsbury on Thursday in the loser's bracket final in Waterford at 5 p.m.
