After two hard-faught losses against perenial Fairfield County Swim League powerhouses Roxbury Club (Stamford) and Middlesex Club (Darien), the Newfield Seals Swim Team rebounded with a pair of convincing wins in FCSL action this week.

On July 7, Newfield defeated cross-town rival Long Ridge Swim Club 310-197 at home for its first win of the season.

On Wednesday, the Seals defeated Innis Arden Club of Greenwich, 311-209.

Newfield's divers again had a successful outing with first-place finishes for Wiley and Lana Schmidt (10 and under girls), Feldman, Kyle O'Donnell (14 and under boys) and Sam Sterman and Annie Archibald (17 and under boys and girls). The dive portion of the meet ended in a 43-17 Newfield victory.

Handali posted a time of 25.09 seconds in the 25 meter freestyle to break the pool record.

Her brother, Nick,  broke two pool records - 12 and under 100 IM in 1:28:97 and 12 and under boys 50 breast with a time of 47:81 seconds.

The culmination of the meet was the boys freestyle relay race.  Newfield's boys relay team of Feldman, Handali, Colin Donovan (14 and under) and William Smelser (17 and under) broke a pool record that had stood since 1972, posting a time of 2 minutes, 30.94 seconds.

The semifinals in the 11-year-old District One baseball tournament were played on Thursday.

Darien National defeated Ridgefield National 3-0 and Wilton bested North Stamford 13-3 in a game that was stopped in the bottom of the fourth due to the mercy rule.

The championship is slated for Sunday at 2 p.m. at Scalzi Park and will precede the 12-year-old final between National Lione and North Stamford.

The Stamford 14s and 15s begin play in the Babe Ruth state tournament this weekend after winning District One titles over the weekend against Greenwich.

The 15s face West Haven on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Volunteer Field in New Milford.

A win sends the team into the winner's bracket semifinal on Sunday against either Ansonia or Trumbull. If Stamford loses, it would face the Ansonia-Trumbull loser in the loser's bracket, also on Sunday.

The Stamford senior American Legion, which has clinched a berth in the state tournament, edged Westport 6-5 on Thursday to improve to 15-10.

Stamford has two games left in the regular season -- Saturday against Greenwich (10 a.m., Havermayer Field) and Sunday against Sunday against Darien/New Canaan (10 a.m., Darien High School)

Stamford has joined Greenwich, Norwalk and Trumbull as Zone Four teams who have locked up postseason berths. The play-in tournament begins on Tuesday.
