eighth-grader BJ Buckle (’16) has been selected to participate in the 2012 Eastbay Youth All-American Game.

A Norwalk native, Buckle will play offensive line for the USA squad in the East Bay Youth Bowl – USA vs. Canada on Sunday in the Alamo Dome in San Antonio. This follows a full week of practice with the Youth All American Team and a chance to watch the U.S. Army All American high school game – live. Youth Bowls are webcast live on www.footballuniversity.org and www.allamericangames.tv.

Thousands of youth all-stars are nominated each year for the honor of playing in this prestigious venue. The selection committee, consisting of Football University’s regional directors and scouts, work with hundreds of local youth football coaches and commissioners year-round to identify the top athletes. They then narrow the field to 40 players for each of the four games.

Buckle's invitation to play said, “You are a dedicated football athlete and very deserving of this honor.”

He was selected for this individual honor because of his great performance on the Connecticut All Star team this fall.

"BJ is a special player," said Ryan Brown, St. Luke's head football, assistant athletic director and Buckle's advisor. "He started for our varsity team’s offensive line as an eighth-grader and that says a lot about his ability.

"He has the opportunity to develop into a truly great lineman during the next few years. Not only is he a great player, he's a great student athlete who always has a smile on his face. He's going to be fun to watch.”

Buckle also is a member of the Prep band, playing the saxophone, and will play baseball for St. Luke’s in the spring.

The organization that runs the game is Football University or FBU. For more information about the game, visit www.footballuniversity.org/eastbay-youth-all-american-bowl.

Former King Low Heywood Thomas standout Silas Redd rushed for only 53 yards on 14 carries in Penn State's 30-14 loss to Houston on Monday in the TicketCity Bowl.

Redd finished his sophomore season with 1,241 yards. The Norwalk native was the Big Ten Conference's fourth-leading rusher during the regular season.

Former Stamford High School linebacker Khairi Fortt also concluded his sophomore season for the Nittany Lions, making two solo stops.  He finished the season with 12 solo tackles and 23 assisted tackles.

Penn State had no answers for Houston quarterback Case Keenum, who passed for 532 yards and three touchdowns while completing 45 of his 69 attempts.

The Nittany Lions (9-4) concluded a tumultuous season that saw iconic coach Joe Paterno fired in the wake of the child sex-abuse scandal involving former Penn State assistant Jerry Sandusky.

Monday marked Penn State's first bowl game without Paterno since the 1962 Gator Bowl.

Last month, Redd was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation Connecticut Player of the Year.

Redd and the 2011 Walter Camp All-America team will be honored at the organization's awards banquet on Jan. 14 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.

Redd became the Nittany Lion to be selected Walter Camp's Connecticut Player of the Year. First presented in 1981, recipients of the honor in the past decade include: Dwight Freeney (Syracuse), Aaron Hernandez (Florida), Dan Orlovsky (UConn) and Kory Sheets (Purdue).

A second-team All-Big Ten honoree by the media and coaches, Redd finished the regular season with 1,188 rushing yards, good for No. 12 on Penn State's season list. With the 53 yards Monday, he moved into 10th place, passing Evan Royster (1,236 in 2008) and Curtis Enis (1,210 in 1996).

A U.S. Army All-American for Coach Dan Gouin at King Low Heywood Thomas School, Redd ended the regular season averaging 99.0 yards per game with seven rushing touchdowns even though he was limited by a collarbone/sternum injury for the final three games.

Redd led all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players with 703 rushing yards in October, including five consecutive 100-yard games. He is the first Nittany Lion with five consecutive 100-yard games since All-American Curtis Enis in 1997.
