Kevin Leumene scored 21 points and Jason Boswell added 19 Wednesday as the boys basketball team opened defense of its Class M state championship wiith a 74-43 victory over Harding.

Wednesday marked the debut of new Presidents coach Charles Clemons, who is taking over for the legendary Charlie Bentley. In 34 years at Harding, Bentley guided Harding to nine state championships and ranks second on the state's all-time wins list behind St. Joseph's Vito Montelli.

Schadrac Casimir added for the Crusaders, who jumped out to a 17-10 lead after the first quarter and extended their edge to 33-21 at the half.

Trinity Catholic then put away the contest with a 20-10 spurt in the third period as the Crusaders picked up where they left off in last season's state championship game against Career.

The Greenwich High School boys basketball team opened its season Wednesday with an impressive 61-50 victory over Stamford, last year's FCIAC runner-up.

The Cardinals, who won just four games a year ago, jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first three-plus minutes and were never threatened thereafter.

Greenwhich led 16-8 after the first quarter and extended its advantage to 33-17 at the half. The Cardinals were up 44-31 after three and led by as many as 20 points in the final period before the Black Knights made a belated late run to make the final a bit for respectable.

Greenwich led 57-37 with just over three minutes remaining in the contest. The Cardinals are back in action on Friday at Fairfield Ludlowe.

Barry Boderick scored 16 points and brother Bryan Boderick added 15 to lead the way for Stamford.

Kelsey Cognetta and Ashyla Cody each scored 11 points as the Stamford girls basketball team shook off a slow start to defeat Greenwich 44-41 Wednesday.

Kelsey Santagata added 10 for the Black Knights (3-0), who trailed 10-4 after the first quarter. Stamford responded with a 17-6 spurt in the second to go up 21-17 at the half.

With Stamford leading 42-41. Cognetts missed two free throws with nine second left, but the Black Knights got the offensive rebound and Santagata hit a pair with six seconds left to put away the contest.

Angie Jaramillo was the only player in double figures for Greenwich with 10 points.  Amanda Onofrio added eight.

Mackenzie Griffin scored 17 points and Ali Palma added 15 and five rebounds as the Trinity Catholic girls basketball team defeated Harding 73-27 on Wednesday.

Kelly Hurd added 10 points for the Crusaders, who opened a 32-15 halftime lead, then slowly pulled away in the second half.
