The boys basketball team opens defense of its Class M state championship on Wednesday when the Crusaders host Harding (7 p.m.) which will have a new face on the bench.

Seeded just 18th, Trinity Catholic made a surprising run to the school's sixth state championship in March, defeating top seed Career Magnet 57-51 in the finals at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Charles Clemon will be making his coaching debut for the Presidents as he succeeds the legendary Charlie Bentley, who retired after guiding Harding to nine state championships in 34 seasons.

Trinity Catholic has the majority of its players back, including guard Schadrac Casimir, and received a boost in the offseason when 6-foot-5Jason Boswell transferred in from the nationally-renowned St. Patrick program in Elizabeth, N.J.

Trinity Catholic and St. Joseph may be the two teams to beat in the FCIAC this season.

In another season opener on Wednesday, Stamford visits Greenwich in a 7 p.m. start.

The Black Knights lost to Bassick 57-51 in last season's FCIAC championship game.

New Canaan girls hockey player Olivia Hompe and Westhill girls basketball player Megan D’Alessandro are the winners of the first winter BlueStreak-Overtime FCIAC Player of the Week awards.

Hompe had five goals, including the 100th or her career, and two assists in an 8-4 win over Glastonbury.

D’Alessandro averaged 30 points per game in the Vikings' first two contests, scoring 32 against Wilton and 28 points and against Ridgefield.
