Stamford Routs Greenwich 12-0 In U-15 Babe Ruth District One Finals at Cubeta Stadium [Video]

Stamford puts away the game early by scoring 10 runs in the first inning to win the opener in the best-of-three series that continues on Sunday (5 p.m. at Cubeta)

Stamford erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning Saturday en route to a 12-0 victory over Greenwich in the opening game of the 15-year-old District One Babe Ruth finals at Cubeta Stadium.

Stamford will look to sweep the best-of-three series on Sunday (5 p.m., Cubeta) while Greenwich hopes to force a deciding game which would follow immediately.

Stamford put away Saturday's contest early, collecting nine hits and sending 14 batters to the plate in the first inning. The game was called after 4 1/2 innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Greenwich, which was missing some key players due to other commitments, made six errors, including four in the first inning, and only four of Stamford's runs were earned.

Sean Remondino, Ryan Duggan and Mike Palomba - the first three hitters in Stamford's lineup - each had two hits in the first inning. Duggan drove in three runs in the first and Palomba and Matt Sciaetta two apiece.

Duggan paced Stamford's 13-hit attack with three hits, going 3-for-4, while Remondino and Palomba each added two hits.

While he only pitched the first three innings, Palomba was overpowering on the mound, striking out eight, including seven in a row during one stretch.

The only hit he allowed came with two outs in the third when Zack Monick's popup dropped in front of second baseman Sciaetta. Palomba also issued one walk.

Greenwich reliever Charlie Russell gave up only one run over the final two innings after starter John Mikolpas yielded 11 - four earned - in the first two innings.

In the 14-year-old Babe Ruth final, played at Greenwich's Byrum Field on Saturday, Justin Nizolek tossed a complete game four-hitter to lead Stamford to a 4-2 victory over Greenwich in the series opener.

Nizolek also had a bases-clearing double in the second inning when Stamford took a 3-0 lead. Jack Rakoczy's sacrifice fly made it 4-0 in the fifth. Greenwich got its two runs on Justin Gaccione's two-run double in the sixth.

Game two in the series will be played on Sunday at 10 a.m. with the third game to follow if necessary.

In the 13-year-old final, Craig Miller singled in Jake Frasca with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Darien edged Stamford, 4-3. Miller finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.

His sacrifice fly gave Darien a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth but Stamford tied it in the seventh on a throwing error.

The series continues Sunday morining at Darien High School at 10, followed by the deciding game if necessary.
