Game Time for Annual Sharkey Laureno Baseball Tournament

The 27th Annual Sharkey Laureno Memorial Baseball Tournament will be played Sunday, August 4th through Wednesday, August 14th, 2013 at Stamford’s Cubeta Stadium. This year’s tournament comprises 18 area teams in a 14 year old & under division and a 15 year old & under division.

Participants include three teams from Stamford’s Babe Ruth Baseball program. Also participating are teams from Greenwich, Norwalk, Stamford American Legion, Fairfield, Westchester County and New York City.

Play starts on Sunday, August 4th, with six games starting at 9:00am. The day’s featured game is in the 15 year-old division between Stamford Babe Ruth Thunder and Stamford American Legion starting at 8:15pm.

The tournament continues with double headers each week day at 5:30 pm and 7:45 pm. The tournament benefits the Sharkey Laureno Scholarship Fund, Inc. in providing financial aid to students who played in Stamford's Junior Babe Ruth Baseballprogram. Beginning in 1987, Laureno Scholarships have provided 132 college students with more than $267,000 in financial aid. The Sharkey Laureno Scholarship Fund, Inc.’s continuing goal is to help more students with larger scholarships. The Sharkey Tournament is known for terrific baseball and fantastic food. The community is invited to Cubeta Stadium to enjoy a day or evening at the ballpark while supporting education for Stamford’s young people.

This year’s scholarship award ceremony will be held on Saturday, August 10 at 7:30 pm at Cubeta Stadium. The 2013 Nick Corbo Community Service Award will be presented to John R. Meehan between games on Tuesday, August 13 at 7:30 pm.
