Six Cloonan Students Headed to West Point STEM Workshop

Six Cloonan Middle School students have been selected from hundreds of applicants nationwide to participate in a four day STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) workshop June 2 -5 at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

The Cloonan students, all seventh graders, are part of the College For Every Student (CFES) STEM program that helps students become college ready, with a strategic focus on increasing their interest, knowledge, and skill in STEM.

“I hope to expand my knowledge of the math and science fields and meet new people who share my interests,” said seventh grader Hoshania Kumaian.

Designed to motivate middle school students in STEM fields, the West Point Workshop, will also show students about the different opportunities at West Point.

“The sooner young people are introduced to these areas, the better they can prepare for possible admission to West Point and other tier one

colleges and universities,” wrote Major Betty P. Myrthil, Diversity Admissions Officer at United States Military Academy.

After receiving his acceptance letter, Jharif Rochabrun, said, “This will provide me with experiences to help me get into the college that I want to go to and help me reach my goals.”

“Our partnership with West Point has opened countless doors for our Scholars,” said CFES President & CEO Rick Dalton.  “It’s experiences and opportunities like the West Point STEM Workshop that are going to make lasting impressions on these students and ultimately effect their future college and career decisions.”
