Part-Time Enrollment at Local Colleges Increases, While Full-Time Decreases

The bad economy is a major reason for this trend, according to the executive director of the Office of Financial and Academic Affairs for Higher Education.

Figures released this week by the Office of Financial and Academic Affairs for Higher Education reveal that local colleges saw an increase in part-time and a decrease in full-time enrollment during the fall of 2011, according to the Connecticut Mirror.

According to the OFAAHE, 129,169 students enrolled full-time during fall 2011, down from 129,268 in fall 2010, while 73,733 students enrolled part-time, up from 71,369 in fall 2010.

Executive Director Jane Ciarleglio told the Mirror that the change is most likely due to the bad economy, which is making it difficult for students to afford tuition. She added that the trend wil probably countinue as long as the economy continues to suffer.
