Kiwanis Gives Back to Kindergarteners

The Kiwanis Club of Stamford will donate a new book to each student entering kindergarten this year.

Tuesday evening at the Boys and Girls Club, members for the Kiwanis Club of Stamford gathered to insert bookmarks and affix labels to hundreds of copies of Little Hoot, a book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal being donated to each student entering kindergarten in Stamford Public Schools. Books were originally scheduled to be presented to students at an even at K.T. Murphy Elementary School on the first day of school, Sep. 1, however, the district’s delayed opening due to damages from Hurricane Irene will postpone the event at a time to be determined.

“The book is age appropriate for students in kindergarten through second grade,” said Chris Tasik, Kiwanis Club president. “It’s about an owl who has to stay up late—because he is an owl—but he wants to go to bed early because his friends are. It’s a fun twist on having to go to bed early because you have to go to school in the morning.”

Tasik said the club worked with the district, including Acting Superintendent Winifred Hamilton and Mary Schaefer, curriculum associate for elementary literacy. Each kindergarten teacher received a copy of the book that will be added to the classroom’s library. The book will be read to the students on the first day of school along with an accompanying art project.

“The class will read the book and follow up. It will become more of a book talk,” said Hamilton at Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting.

The Kiwanis Club is an international service organization committed to volunteering to improve communities around the world. Donating books for students is a new initiative from the club. The Stamford chapter currently has 42 members, including Mayor Michael Pavia.
