The Night Sky: Moon Landing

Yes Virginia, Humans HAVE walked on the Moon!

On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on
the Moon in an area called the ‘Sea of Tranquility’. They exited the ‘Eagle’ spacecraft and collected rock samples in their bulky space suits for nearly 2 ½ hours. They returned to Earth with about 50 pounds of lunar samples.

It always amazes me when I think that it has been more than 40 years since humans first walked on the Moon. There was no Internet, and
computer power was almost non-existent. It goes to show what can be
accomplished when people focus their minds on accomplishing a goal and pull together.

Much of the abundant technological advancements we take for granted today are the result of the effort to get to the Moon. On a personal
note … my own interest in astronomy was inspired by the Moon landings. Back then, we all wanted to be astronauts ‘when we grew up’.

I took the attached picture of the Moon at the Round Hill Observatory. I put an ‘X’ where the Apollo 11 astronauts landed in the Sea of Tranquility. In spite of what some conspiracy theorist say, we HAVE been there.

Clear skies!
