A new sports complex in Stamford, the city honors Bobby Valentine and the Board of Ed discusses grouping in middle schools.

Business

  • The of Chelsea Piers Connecticut, a 400,000-square-foot sports complex located at the former Clairol site in Stamford, officially begun this week. Features include two NHL regulation ice rinks, turf fields for soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey, softball, and baseball, a gymnastics center, an aquatics center with an Olympic-sized pool, seven tennis courts, 12 squash courts and more.
  • Stamford-based MXenergy, a natural gas company, on Friday that is being purchased by Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG), a Baltimore-based energy company. The all-cash transaction totals $175 million.

Government

  • Hundreds of friends, family members and colleagues of Bobby Valentine, the city's director of public safety, health and welfare, at the Italian Center Wednesday night to honor him as the 2010 Stamford Citizen of the Year.
  • The 2011 Redistricting Commission, which has been selected by the to redraw voter boundaries within the city, for the first time Tuesday evening. The Commission nominated and approved Vincent Freccia and David Martin as its co-chairs to represent the Republican and Democrat sides, respectively.

  • Sixteen individuals from Stamford and Norwalk were with federal offenses Thursday related to the alleged trafficking of firearms, including machine guns, and narcotics following a series of raids executed by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, the Drug Enforcement Agency and local police. More than 100 firearms have been purchased or seized during the investigation.
  • A Hartford woman accused of causing had her bond Monday during her arraignment in state Superior Court in Stamford. Yadira Torres, 26, cried through her appearance before Judge Robert L. Genuario, who set her bond at $35,000. Since her arrest shortly after the accident, State Police had held her in lieu of $100,000 bond. State Police have the victims of Saturday's fatal accident on I-95 in Darien as Kelly Taborda, 18, and James A. Sorto, 42, of North Bergen, N.J. Lt. Paul Vance said Taborda was also pregnant at the time of the accident.

Schools

  • Patch contributor Marion Herbert with Wendy Lecker, co-president of the Stamford Parent Teacher Council, about the possibility of reintroducing grouping back into the city's middle schools. The following evening, the Board of Ed the topic at its meeting and agreed that it will not revert back to more grouping in the immediate future.
