State DOT Plans to Raze Stamford Train Station Parking Garage

The DOT reportedly plans to tear down the parking garage and replace it with a mixed use, private development including apartments and restaurants.

According to a report on WTNH, the DOT has been discussing the project with city officials and commercial developers for some time and is currently soliciting proposals from the private sector. The existing garage has for years been .

DOT officials reportedly told News 8 they hope the new development "will have a transformative impact on the City of Stamford," by making it more convenient for commuters to shop and dine. However some people interviewed in the report expressed concern that the project may increase traffic congestion in the area around the station.

In order for the project to come to fruition the DOT would have to replace the parking spaces lost through demolition by building new parking within a quarter mile of the train station. The WTNH report does not state where the new parking would be located.
