Occupy Darien Organizer Arrested Over Weekend

Margaret Rague, who is organizing an "Occupy Darien" demonstration, was arrested Saturday on breach of peace, disorderly conduct and other charges after she was standing in the middle of the Post Road downtown, police said.

Margaret Rague, organizer of at Tilley Pond Park in Darien, was arrested Saturday evening after standing in the roadway just blocks away, apparently intoxicated, police said.

Rague, 61, of 63 Dubois St., was standing and walking on the roadway near 1020 Post Rd., said Capt. Fred Komm, a spokesman for the Darien Police Department.

Komm provided the following account of the incident and Rague's arrest:

Police received calls at about 9 p.m. on reports of a woman walking and standing on the roadway, trying to hitchhike but standing so far into the street that cars had to drive around her.

A police officer dispatched to the scene reported seeing a dark Volvo stopped in the road with Rague standing in front of it. Rague was asked to move to the side, and when she did so, the car drove off.

When a police officer approached Rague, she became verbally confrontational and said she didn't have to listen to police. By this point, an officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol on her.

Rague refused to provide her name or identification and became loud and disruptive, yelling at the police. She was told to quiet down because there were other people downtown, including young children, but she continued.

Rague continued to be uncooperative after her arrest.

Rague was charged with disorderly conduct, creating a public disturbance, breach of peace, interfering with a police officer and refusing to be fingerprinted. She was released on a $500 bond and is scheduled to be in state Superior Court in Stamford on Dec. 14.
