North Stamford Water Supply Committee Holds Inaugural Meeting

The special committee formed by the Board of Representatives held its first meeting last week to discuss the contamination of Scofieldtown Park and surrounding areas.

The North Stamford Water Supply Committee, which was by the to oversee water contamination issues in areas surrounding , held its first meeting last Tuesday.

Committee members Harry Day (R-13), Mary Savage (D-4), Andy Sklover (D-20), Annie Taylor (R-19) and Mitchell Kaufman (D-11) were joined by city health director Anne Fountain, city engineer Lou Casolo, and Karen DeFalco and Jay Crutcher of the North Stamford Concerned Citizens for the Environment (NSCCE), as well as members of the public.

In lieu of a traditional board meeting, attendees were able to freely discuss the steps the city has taken so far in handling contaminated areas of North Stamford, as well as what should be done in the near future. Discussed items included a proposed ordinance that would require the city to offer well water testing to residents in affected areas — the exact cost of each test still needs to be calculated — and the city was required to submit last week detailing how it will cap the Scofieldtown landfill. (Casolo told the committee that construction on landfill wouldn't begin until 2013).

Committee members and attendees also discussed how residents in the area are reacting to the warnings given by city officials and the NSCCE, concerns over how both the contamination and the construction that will take place to fix it might and whether the city should require that all homes in the affected areas be tested.

Committee chair Mitchell Kaufman described to Patch in the video above some of the takeaways from the first meeting.
