A California consulting firm recommended to the Board of Finance Monday night that the city operate with one-third less police officers per shift to save the city funds and impact police overtime use, according to a report by the Stamford Advocate.

The report, from the Matrix Consulting Group, suggested the city cut from 18 officers to 12 during the day and 16 officers to 10 during the midnight shift, stating this move would maximize savings while still allowing for 58-percent of the officer's shift to be spent proactively, the Advocate said.

"It's a large city with 17 distinct neighborhoods," the Advocate reported Stamford Police Chief Robert Nivakoff as saying. "If the changes were made, I don't think it would be at all safe, and people would not be able to sleep at night."
