Connecticut DMV Launches Online Scheduling Service for Learner's Permit Testing

Permit learner tests can now be scheduled online to be taken at the Bridgeport Department of Motor Vehicles office.

The DMV began offering the service, which allows testers to bypass the "walk-in and wait-in-line" process for taking the permit knowledge test, Aug. 5, according to a DMV press release.

DMV Commissioner Melody Currey said the service is in response to customer requests and is still being expanded.

"Our online appointment system is key to customer service and we’re pleased to be able to add another location in Fairfield County,” Currey said in a released statement.  “We are also drafting plans to offer this popular service elsewhere in the state.”

The first available appointment is Aug. 20, though testers are advised to book their times as soon as possible since warm weather months are a common time for people to get their permits and learn to drive, according to the release.

Computers with Internet access will be available in the DMV Bridgeport office for those without access at home.

Out of more than 11,000 customers, 94 percent reported being "very satisfied" with the DMV appointment system since its May 2012 launch, according to the release.

While making the appointment, testers will be asked to make their $59 payment online – the same price as going through a major DMV service office.

The new service is part of a DMV effort to better use technology, allow taxpayer savings and to "make government more responsive," according to the release.

Appointments can be scheduled at the Connecticut DMV website to be taken at the Bridgeport DMV, or at the Cheshire or Norwalk offices.
