[Video] North Stamford Home Reduced to Smoldering Splinters in Explosion

On Tuesday, at approximately 1:54 p.m., Stamford's 911 dispatch center began to receive multiple calls of a house that had exploded along Webbs Hill Road. Emergency responders arrived on scene to find a hole where a home used to be.

Mayor Michael Pavia described the scene as "absolutely nothing left." Police Chief Jon Fontneau called it "a scene out of Hell." Public Safety Director Ted Jankowski kept delivering updates on 400 gallons of propane firefighters were working to contain in a tank during a "controlled burn" so a hellish fire didn't rage out of control.

While police and fire marshals worked on figuring out the cause of the blast, one fact was clear: It was a terrifying scene. Little was left of the home that once stood there. Splinters remained of a once-grand house, scattered in a radius that reached 400 feet. Window panes were spied in the tops of trees.

The explosion resulted in two injuries, one immediately and one from the ensuing emergency response Tuesday. The homeowner was working outside when his house disappeared. HE was taken to Stamford Hospital with no outward injuries, according to Fontneau, but was being monitored and interviewed by investigators working to figure out the cause of the blast. A firefighter was also taken to Stamford Hospital with what was described as a minor back injury.

Because there was no city water supply near the location, a caravan of rotating fire tanker trucks pulled resources from the lake behind Lakeside Diner. Greenwich, New Canaan, Banksville, Pound Ridge and others provided mutual aid to assist with the suppression efforts all day. City engineers checked out surrounding buildings for structural soundness and cleared the nearby homes.

In the above video, Chief Jon Fontneau shared his discovery of a door that used to stand on the home. The home was once located where the smoldering rubble is scene. The door's new location is revealed at the end of the video.
