U.S. Attorney's Office Announces Stamford Man Sentenced to 92 Months

Authorities announced Tuesday the sentencing of a Stamford man to almost 8 years in state prison on weapons charges.

The United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Desmond "Dez" Brown, 31, of Stamford, was sentenced today to 92 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon. Brown pleaded guilty to offense on December 29, 2011.        

According to court documents and statements made in court, on February 12, 2010, Brown possessed a nine-millimeter semi-automatic pistol, a .22 caliber rifle and several rounds of .22 caliber ammunition. The serial numbers of both firearms had been obliterated. On that same date, he also possessed nearly 20 grams of crack cocaine, some of which was packaged for street sale.

Prior to February 2010, Brown had been convicted of several state felony offenses, including two firearm offenses and two robbery offenses. It is a federal offense for a convicted felon to knowingly possess a firearm or ammunition that has traveled in interstate or foreign commerce.        

Brown is currently serving a state sentence for violating the terms of his probation in connection with two 2006 state robbery convictions. Judge Hall ordered that the 92-month sentence be served consecutive to the state sentence, which is due to expire on September 8, 2012.

This case was investigated by the Stamford Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, pursuant to the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative in Stamford.  The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert M. Spector.        

The Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative is aimed at reducing gun and gang violence, deterring illegal possession of guns, and improving the safety of residents in Connecticut’s cities.  Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
