Stamford Woman Hospitalized in Norwalk For Gunshot Wound

A 20-year-old Stamford woman with a gunshot wound in her leg couldn't give a credible account of what happened, and neither could another man who said he brought her to the hospital, according to Norwalk police.

The gunshot wound was real enough, as were the bullet holes in the car, but Norwalk police didn't believe the story told about how a woman was shot, or where, or how she was taken to .

According to a report in The Advocate of Stamford:

Stamford police were investigating a report of shots fired at 1041 E. Main St. when Norwalk police called to inform them of the gunshot victim.

Stamford police were told by witnesses that the woman was driving on East Main Street when another vehicle suddenly boxed her in and the driver opened fire on her; the other car then drove off, and the woman followed; guns may have been fired from both vehicles.

The woman's life was not in danger from the wound, and she was treated by the hospital and released.

Police gave this account of the incident:

At 8:56 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to the emergency department Norwalk Hospital on the report that a woman had arrived that evening with a gunshot wound in her left thigh.

The 20-year-old victim told police that she lives in Stamford but was at Roodner Court with a friend and then started walking with a female friend on Woodward Avenue when a dark-colored car drove up to them and shot her.

When a police officer told the woman that Woodward Avenue doesn't go up to Roodner Court, the woman just smiled.

Incomplete memories

When asked who took her to the hospital, the woman said a friend did. When asked for the friend's name, the woman said she forgot. The woman then became more uncooperative and evasive in her answers.

Norwalk police called other neighboring departments to see if there were reports of gunshots fired. They found that Stamford police were looking into an 8:36 p.m. report of shots fired but did not have a victim. Stamford police then went to Norwalk Hospital to interview the Stamford victim.

In the hospital lobby, Norwalk police met a man who said he was flagged down by the wounded woman and her friend when he was driving in Norwalk.

When asked what car he was driving, he told police he had forgotten what kind of car it was.

When asked whether he picked up the woman in Norwalk or Stamford, he replied, "That's a good question. I forget."

A search of the Norwalk Hospital parking lot turned up a red Altima which is registered in Illinois. It had four bullet holes in the driver's-side door.

Stamford police detectives then took over the investigation.
