On Tuesday evening, the Belltown Volunteer Fire Department hosted a special ceremony recognizing the efforts of its volunteers at two separate emergency scenes.

On June 17, 2011, a serious motor vehicle accident occurred at the corner of Newfield and Oaklawn avenues, only one block from the fire house on Dorlen Rd. A 17-year-old driver suffered serious injuries and had to be extracted from the car. Extrication required multiple rescue tools.

That patient, against the odds, recently returned to Stamford High School for his final year.

On April 29, 2012, a 57-year-old man went into cardiac arrest in his home. Arriving at the residence within minutes, the crew revived the man using a defibrillator to restore the man's heartbeat. He was transported to Stamford Hospital after advance treatment from Stamford EMS.

He has since returned home to his family.

"This will be a fantastic way to recognize the accomplishments of our members and help emphasize what an important part of the community our department is," said Chief John Didelot. "Each year our volunteers spend hundreds of hours, all on their own time, training for emergencies like these. To see such positive results come from that training is extremely rewarding."

Members of Stamford Fire and Rescue, Stamford EMS, and the Stamford Emergency Communications Center, all of whom played roles in the incidents, were present at the ceremony as well.
