Stamford, State Authorities Conducting Parolee Checks Arrest 3

Stamford police conducting checks with representatives from the Connecticut State Parole Department on Wednesday arrested one man for carrying an illegal firearm and drugs and remanded two parolees back into state custody, authorities said Thursday.

According to Capt. Richard Conklin, members of the Narcotics & Organized Crime unit went to visit Hatch Field off Richmond Hill Avenue and West Main Street with state authorities to visit parolee Earl Garner, 40, and discovered him hanging out with a group of people.

One of the men with Garner took off running and police engaged in pursuit and managed to round him up, Conklin said. According to the captain, that man, identified as Jeremy Roberts, 30, of 16 Rose Park Place, was being interviewed by authorities as to why he ran when police detected the odor of marijuana.

Officers, in searching the man for the drugs, found 16 Ziplock bags filled with marijuana packaged for sale and, during the search, also uncovered a loaded 9mm semiautomatic Taurus handgun, Conklin said. The gun allegedly had a 17-round magazine, which is illegal, and had 11 rounds loaded into it with one in the chamber, for a total of 12, when the legal limit for loading a weapon is 10, Conklin said.

Roberts, who Conklin said had a litany of prior arrests and convictions, was taken into custody and charged with illegal possession of a pistol without a permit, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and risk of injury to a child because there were children in the park.

Roberts was issued a $100,000 bond and given a court date of October 9.

Garner, who authorities were there initially to visit, was also found to have a small quantity of marijuana on his person, Conklin said. Because it was an amount less than half-an-ounce, he was issued a $150 summons. However, because his parole terms stipulated staying away from drugs, he was remanded into parole custody and sent to the Bridgeport Correctional Facility to further serve time.

Additionally, as part of the sweep, Caleeb Brown, 22, of 54 Taft Avenue, was also visited by state parole and Stamford authorities at the corner of Ludlow and South Pacific streets.

Conklin said Brown appeared to be intoxicated and, as part of his parole, it was stipulated he was not to consume alcohol or drugs. He was given a field sobriety test, which Conklin said he failed, and was remanded into state custody and transported to the Bridgeport Correctional Facility.
