Stamford Remembers 9/11

Stamford emergency service personnel, alongside city and state officials, took the time Wednesday evening to remember the historic and tragic events of September 11, 2001, on the 12th anniversary of the terror attacks on the World Trade Center.

Mayor Michael Pavia gave a speech regarding the overwhelming and courageous loss of life 12 years ago, by both civilian and emergency service personnel, to police, emergency medical service members and firefighters from all around the city, as well as a number of Stamford residents gathered at Woodside Fire Station 5.

"Many first responders, like yourselves, responded that day and made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty to protect others, doing what they committed to do—offering aid and saving lives," Pavia said. "Their individual acts of bravery and selflessness will remain in the hearts and memories of all Americans."

Pavia said, in remembering those who gave everything, the nation must also remember that the actions of others have made us all stronger and, as a nation, must remain vigilant.

"We are reminded of the frailty of life and the unceasing potential of great evil," he said. "The September 11 attacks were intended to inflict harm and break our spirit; however, as a nation, state and a city, it has made us stronger, more determined and more resolute... Likewise, we, as a city, will continue to work in partnership to commemorate September 11 as our affirmation to provide the very best services possible to keep Stamford a safe and desirable place to live, work and play."

During the ceremony, the flag was hung at half-staff, a wreath was placed before the 9/11 memorial out front of the station and the bell ceremony was conducted, which represented the final ringing of the bell to let the firefighters who'd died in the line of duty know their shift was done.
