Stamford PD: Man Sleeping at Wheel Arrested 12 Times, Deported Twice

Police said the man was discovered sleeping at the wheel, sitting in his idling vehicle at an intersection in the city.

Stamford police officers pulled up to a man asleep at the wheel early Monday morning while he was in his vehicle, in the middle of the road, sitting at the intersection of Manhattan and Atlantic streets, Lt. Diedrich Hohn said Monday morning.

Officers approached the vehicle and determined the man, identified as Mauricio Arturo Madrid, 34, of Woodland Pl., was allegedly under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Hohn said.

Officers woke the man and discovered, as they took him into custody, that Madrid had been arrested twelves times previously and deported twice, according to Hohn. While being processed, it was discovered he also had four warrants currently out for his arrest, including a Bureau of Criminal Identification warrant for second-degree assault, Hohn said.

Madrid was charged with driving under the influence, and faces additional charges stemming from the outstanding warrants including three counts of violation of probation and the assault. His bond was set at $70,000.

At some point while in police custody, Madrid allegedly attempted to hang himself, then became combative with police officers when they attempted to stop him, Hohn said.
