Stamford Officers Accused of Being Involved With Teen to Serve Suspensions Without Pay

Stamford Police Chief Jon Fontneau announced Wednesday two officers accused of having an inappropriate "involvement" with a 17-year-old girl would serve extended sentences before being reinstated.

The girl alleged she was involved with Ofc. Robert Macari, 43, an 11-year veteran. Through and initial investigation launched by Fontneau, Ofc. William Garay, 28, a 6-year veteran, was also found to be involved.

Relieved of duty May 16, the day following the allegations being brought to the attention of the department, Fontneau said investigations between the SPD, Internal Affairs and the State's Attorney's Office determined there was no probable cause for arrested.

However, Fontneau said it was determined the pair had in appropriately communicated with the teen via text message. The chief said their actions revealed poor judgment and were a display of conduct unbecoming an officer.

"The investigation has shown that the actions of both officers have led to a breakdown in public trust critical to our profession," Fontneau said. "It is expected that each member of the Stamford Police Department will garner the public's confidence through sound judgment and ethical conduct. Every officer should earn the respect of the citizens we serve and strive to avoid not only inappropriate conduct, but the appearance of any impropriety."

Following the outcome of the investigations, Fontneau said Macari will serve a 30-day suspension without pay and Garay will serve a 10-day suspension also without pay.
