Stamford Man Shot As He Is Questioned By Police

Police were investigating reports of shots being fired on Taylor Street when the victim was hit by a gunman who fled the scene.

A man being questioned by Stamford Police investigating reports that five shots were fired on Taylor Street early Saturday, was shot as he and a police officer stood beneath a street light.

Capt. Richard Conklin said two dots were fired at the officer and the victim as the officer questioned the 21-year-old victim about 2:37 a. m. June 29 beneath a streetlight at the intersection of Perry Street and Richmond Hill Avenue.

"The officer saw the first shot spark as it hit the pavement," Conklin said. "The second shot hit the right hip of the party he was interviewing. The officer ducked for cover."

The officer radioed for backup and "officers saturated the area. The victim claims he wasn't a target-that he lives in the area and was going to the store," Conklin said.

The victim was taken to Stamford Hospital for treatment of a non life-threatening hip injury. The gunman for whom little information on a description was available, fled the scene.

Investigators recovered shell casings in the area, according to Conklin. And investigators haven't said whether both shootings are related.

Conklin said he is concerned because the shooting took place with the uniformed officer in full view.

"We have to presume that be saw the uniform. We're very fortunate with a dangerous situation out there with the officers. The city is very busy at that time with the vibrant nightlife ... There are a lot of people out there with the bars closing."

The unidentified officer was unhurt and remains on duty, Conklin said.
