Stamford Man Pleads Guilty to Operating Gambling Ring

A Stamford man pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to operating an illegal gambling business between 2008 and 2011, authorities announced that afternoon.

According to Acting US Attorney for the District of Connecticut Deirdre Daly, 45-year-old Stephen Joyce pleaded guilty to operating a "lucrative" illegal sports bookmaking operating within Stamford that involved at least five other bookmakers between January 2008 and August 2011.

Investigators conducting a search of Joyce's Stamford residence on July 27, 2011, seized extensive gambling records, a laptop and additional items, Daly said.

Pleading guilty to once count of operating an illegal gambling business, Daly faces sentencing on December 17, 2013, and could be sent to prison for up to five years and fined up to $250,000. He's also agreed to forfeit $175,000 in gambling proceeds, Daly said.
