A motor vehicle stop for a license plate infraction led to additional charges being issued for marijuana possession, New Canaan police said Monday.
According to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc, A officer on patrol along South Avenue near Oak Street observed a vehicle traveling at approximately 10:13 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22, with a light out on the rear license plate, meaning the plate was unreadable in passing due to a lack of illumination.
As the officer conducted a motor vehicle stop, Ogrinc said the officer noted the driver, identified as Matthew S. Kryszczynski, 20, of 198 Overbrook Drive in Stamford, had glassy eyes, but the officer could detect no odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. When the officer asked Kryszczynski if he'd been using drug, Kryszczynski reportedly became "visibly nervous."
When asked for consent to search the vehicle, Kryszczynski reportedly complied. Ogrinc said the officer discovered a pill bottle in the glove box that appeared to and smelled like it contained marijuana residue. Ogrinc said a small roach was also found under the driver's seat.
Kryszczynski was charged with an infraction for possession of marijuana under half-an-ounce, failure to display a rear plate lamp and was issued a verbal warning for unecessary noise for a "loud muffler."
