Stamford Man Fires at Group, Misses Kids Behind Them by Mere Feet

A family sitting on their front porch. Two young children spending time with their mother. Suddenly, gunshots.

A family sitting on their front porch, unrelated in anyway to the events that would transpire. Two children, 2- and 4-years-old, sitting with their mother. And then, ten feet from their head, wood splinters apart. Gunshots crack across the quiet evening air.

Police said these are the events that transpired around 7:30 p.m. Sunday night at the residence of 122 Henry St. A man—one of two wanted in connection to the incident—is in custody and has admitted to the role he played in the harrowing experience, police said.

Andre Quinn Russell, 18, of Ludlow St., faces a slew of charges in the incident, police released Monday. Police arrested him as they canvased the area following the alleged shooting, they said, and witnessed him attempting to enter his residence in clothing matching the description of the suspect.

Police said Russell admitted to firing at a group of individuals standing on the sidewalk in front of the Henry St. residence, a group unrelated to the family enjoying the evening on the porch of the home behind them.

Police said five shots were reportedly fired. They said they have recovered one slug from the home, two from a vehicle in front of the residence and two slugs have yet to be located. No shells have been found and no one was reportedly struck by the gunfire.

Authorities explained that Russell has admitted he fired at the group in what he called a move of self-defense, saying he had a run-in with the group the previous evening and he was simply protecting himself.

Russell and a second suspect fled the area on foot, police said, though they have yet to arrest the second suspect, stating Russell has been uncooperative in that regard.

Russell was scheduled to appear in court Monday, held on a $25,000 bond. He faces two counts of risking injury to a child, three counts of reckless endangerment, a criminal weapons possession charge, one count of discharging a weapon and illegally carrying a pistol without a permit. He reportedly had a previous juvenile record and adult infractions involving narcotics, according to police.
