Stamford Man Finds Gun While Looking for Cans in Garbage

The man turned the rifle over to a police officer working in the area.

A police officer working an extra-duty shift, what police call a "ditch job", was approached by a homeless man who'd said he'd discovered a gun in the bushes, police said Wednesday.

At approximately 11 a.m. yesterday, police said an officer working an extra job in the area of the Pacific St. at Woodland St. was approached by a Robert Addison, a man known previously to police, who was attempting to perform a Good Samaritan act by turning in a discovered weapon, police said.

According to authorities, Addison alleges to have discovered a rifle the previous evening in some bushes as he was going through the garbage looking for cans. He then took the weapon, identified by police as a rifle with a modified stock, broken bolt and barrel filled with dirt, and stashed it near an abandoned apartment building.
