Stamford Man Calls Police for Help Collecting Illegal $22,000 Prize

Stamford police dispatched to a man calling about help collecting gambling winnings was found to be claiming winnings from an illegal gambling operation

Stamford police responded to a call from a Myrtle Ave. residence when a man called and claimed he needed help from authorities collecting a $22,000 prize, police said Tuesday morning.

Police said the man explained that he'd hit the daily numbers prize and now the establishment wouldn't pay up. According to police, he produced a stamped receipt showing them he'd won and explained when he'd produced the receipt for the establishment, they refused to pay up. 

According to authorities, when pressed about it, the man admitted to playing in an illegal numbers operation.

Police said they seized several tickets, including the "winning" one, as evidence. The man also provided additional locations he preferred to visit for playing numbers games, police said. An investigation is ongoing.
